Anyone know of a winamp plugin that will make stereo tracks compatible with mono just like FM radio? A lot of old stereo songs were spread way too far apart, so I want to combine the left and right channels into one but at the same time avoid cancelling out any of the sound.

Mono sucks, but you could compress the stereo image?
I know there is a setting in Winamp to make it play mono, but it doesn't seem to work.
You aren't playing just wider stereo Oldies are you?
Cause one with more center panning will sound lifeless in mono . this is an opinion of corse.

Fine by me, stereo records from that time already sound lifeless anyway. Vocals on one side, instruments on the other, and a lot of dead air in between. But I also want to avoid phase cancellation, which basically means that certain sounds could be cancelled out when one listens in mono.

Why could that happen?
This stereo/mono stuf fasinates me.

The stereo field isn't always properly balanced, whether it's the fault of the recording engineer, mastering engineer, or whoever I don't know. Basically a sound could be half left or half right, so the result when you listen in mono is that sound disappears completely. But somehow they avoid that on FM radio. That's what I'm after.

I can't help but wonder if they get copies from the TM Century hit disks or other companies, that have already done the work for them.
